A Historic Invitation
On 12 February 2025, the co-founders of Merlins Group had the distinct honour of attending a special commemoration at the Houses of Parliament in London. The event was held to recognise the extraordinary courage, sacrifice and contribution of Commonwealth soldiers who served during the First and Second World Wars -- men and women from across the Commonwealth who answered the call of duty and played a pivotal role in securing the freedoms we enjoy today.
Hosted by the Rt. Hon. Bob Blackman CBE MP and organised in partnership with The Memorial Gates Foundation, the ceremony brought together parliamentarians, diplomats, military veterans, business leaders and community figures for an afternoon of remembrance, reflection and celebration of the Commonwealth's enduring legacy.
Honouring Commonwealth Heroes
The commemoration paid tribute to the millions of volunteers from the Indian subcontinent, Africa, the Caribbean and other Commonwealth nations who served alongside British forces. Their stories -- of bravery in the trenches of the Somme, the deserts of North Africa, the jungles of Burma and the beaches of Normandy -- are woven into the fabric of our shared history, yet too often go unrecognised.
The courage of Commonwealth soldiers is a story that belongs to all of us. Their sacrifice transcended borders, cultures and continents -- and it is our duty to ensure their legacy is never forgotten.
The Memorial Gates on Constitution Hill, which stand as a permanent tribute to these servicemen and women, were the symbolic centrepiece of the day's proceedings. Speakers recalled the scale of the Commonwealth contribution: over five million volunteers who served in the two World Wars, many of whom never returned home. The event served as a powerful reminder that the defence of liberty was truly a global effort.
Representing Birmingham's Technology Sector
For our founders, the invitation to Parliament represented more than a personal milestone -- it was an opportunity to represent Birmingham's growing technology sector on a national stage. As a city that has undergone a remarkable transformation in recent years, Birmingham is now home to a thriving ecosystem of technology companies, creative agencies and innovators who are driving the UK's digital economy forward.
Merlins Group, with its roots firmly planted in Birmingham, works across technology services including website development, data science, AI integration and automation, as well as marketing, content production and brand strategy. Being present at Parliament allowed the team to showcase the calibre of work being produced outside of London and to advocate for greater recognition of the regions in the national technology conversation.
The event provided a unique platform to discuss how technology companies like Merlins Group are contributing to economic growth, job creation and digital transformation across the West Midlands and beyond.
Networking with National Leaders
Beyond the ceremony itself, the day offered invaluable networking opportunities. The co-founders engaged in meaningful conversations with a wide range of attendees, including:
- Members of Parliament and government officials discussing the role of technology in the UK's future economic strategy
- Business leaders from across multiple sectors, exploring collaboration opportunities and shared challenges
- Representatives from The Memorial Gates Foundation, learning about their ongoing work to preserve Commonwealth heritage
- Veterans and their families, whose personal stories brought the historical significance of the day into sharp, human focus
- Fellow entrepreneurs and founders from other regions, sharing insights on scaling businesses beyond the capital
These connections have already begun to open doors for future collaborations, partnerships and projects that align with Merlins Group's mission to deliver impactful technology and marketing solutions for businesses of all sizes.
A Proud Moment for the Team
Attending a commemoration at the Houses of Parliament is a moment that the entire Merlins Group team takes pride in. It reflects the journey that the company has been on since its founding -- from a small Birmingham-based operation to a recognised technology and marketing group that is now being invited to contribute to national conversations.
The event reinforced a core belief at Merlins Group: that technology, when guided by purpose and community, can be a force for real, lasting good. The stories of Commonwealth soldiers remind us that progress is built on the shoulders of those who came before, and that every generation has a responsibility to contribute meaningfully to the world around them.
As we continue to grow and expand our capabilities across technology, data science, construction and community interest work, moments like these serve as a powerful reminder of why we do what we do -- and who we do it for.
